Utah population projected to increase across state
New long-term demographic and economic projections released Monday by the Kem. C. Gardner Policy Institute at the University of Utah, project Utah’s population will increase to 5.8 million by 2065. According to the report, all counties within the state will grow over the next 50 years, with Utah County experiencing the largest numeric increase in population.
Utah County is expected to add more than 1 million residents over that time, resulting in a 177 percent population increase. Utah County will hold 37 percent of the state’s total projected population growth. Salt Lake County will still remain the most populous in the state, and Washington County is expected to have the most rapid growth rate, seeing a 229 percent increase over the next 50 years.
“It’s fascinating to see how the unique demographic characteristics and dynamics of each county play out in these projections,” said Pamela Perlich, director of demographic research at the Gardner Policy institute. “The growth dynamic of the urban area is clearly shifting to Utah County, which is evolving into a more diversified economic and demographic place.”

Utah cities top American metros adding the most jobs
Five years ago, the U.S. job market was still recovering from the effects of the Great Recession, as the national unemployment rate was about double what it is today. Across the country, after years of job losses, a number of metropolitan areas struggled with much, much higher jobless rates.
In the last five years, many of these metropolitan areas have reversed course, adding in some cases tens of thousands of employed workers to the economy and in most cases reaching more optimal unemployment levels.
Saint George topped the list of these metros growing jobs, and the Provo/Orem metro came in third place. Provo/Orem’s employment increase from 2012 to 2017 was 25.3 percent, with an overall employment increase of 58,135 jobs. The industry contributing most to job growth in both Saint George and Provo/Orem was retail.
According to the report, only a few metro areas had consistently low unemployment over the past half decade. For example, Provo, Utah had a May 2012 unemployment rate of 4.9 percent when the U.S. rate was 8.2 percent. Provo, with its growing tech and professional sectors, added nearly 60,000 employees since then and now has a 2.9 percent unemployment rate.
